The Advantages and Disadvantages of Taking a Part-time Job

Taking part-time jobs has become the phenomenon among university students.
Indeed, there are some advantages and, also, some disadvantages.
One of the advantages is that students can earn money. Some students have to earn money on their own to pay the tuition while some students just earn money to pay for their expenditure or satisfy their desire. In this material-oriented society, money is important and indispensable in our daily lives, so it’s a beneficial advantage to work part time.
Another advantage is that students can acquire more experiences and polish their skills when taking part-time jobs. For example, if you enjoy teaching, working part-time as a tutor may help you improve your teaching skills and gain experiences. Different kinds of jobs require different skills; therefore, you are likely to gain experiences and improve skills as long as you devote yourself to working.
On the contrary, there are some disadvantages, too. For instance, you might be too exhausted after working to focus on your academic studying. It’s inappropriate to skip classes or forget to do assignments due to part-time jobs because a student’s duty is to try effort to do well at school.
Another disadvantage is that you might be deceived by the advertisement of part-time jobs. It’s the dangerous part when finding or working part-time jobs.
To sum up, as I mentioned above, there are some pros and cons when working part-time jobs. Consequently, all of us should think twice before taking part- time jobs. And when we take part-time jobs, we can’t ignore or forget our duties.

Nowadays reality

Everyday we get to know new histories of young people that finished college and can’t get a job or if they can get one, most of the times, it isn’t in there area or for there level of qualifications. So, in this moment, we leave a reality that shows us young and qualified people working in supermarkets, in shops, etc.
This reality has an enormous influence in students. For those students that finished their studies and can’t get a job, this situation is very frustrating, because they ‘spent’ all their life studying to one day they could find a job and have a good life. And for those students that still are studying this problem also has a big influence because they start thinking that they are studying for nothing because they won’t be able to get a job, so it’s equal study or not, what is a wrong idea. If people qualified has difficulties to get a job, people without qualifications has even more difficulties to find one.
I think, nowadays, the world of work is a very difficult and competitive world, but I also see that not all students can’t get a job. There are some students, some very good students that when finish college have lots of jobs offers in their areas, because they aren’t equal to every other student, and this difference is in the way they think. They are ambitious students and they want to make the difference in this world, and of course they are very good in what they do. So I think that each one of us (students) should start thinking this way, and believing if they really want something, they will be able to achieve it.
We (students) will be able to get the job that we dreamed with, if we want make the difference!

Fishing Industry in Peniche

To demonstrate in the best way what are the conditions of the fishing industry in Peniche here we have a testimony of a fisherman Mr. Américo Martins of the boat"Rio Minho"
Question1
- Which led you to enter this particular sector?
Answer:- Well, several factors interfered with my decision including financial difficulties, it was only my mother working, education in Peniche wasn´t very good so I just have the fourth class,rare were those who could pay the rest of the studies to their children at that time. Peniche being a good fishing port I found by better join something related to fishing, the only thing that was requested at the time was able to swim so I accepted.

Question2
- What are the main problems or difficulties of your job?
Answer:- Basically the main problem is the weather because if is bad weather the boat doesn´t go to the sea and so we lost profits, which will interfere with the salary.Another problem may be the lack of maintenance of the vessel, leading to collapse of parts during the travel and therefore a risk for the workers. ~

Question3
- Exist conditions for the conduct of your work?
Answer:-Yes there is, my boat is among the best of Peniche, have some of the better marine equipment such as radar that facilitates the work when fog appears.

Question4
- How many hours do you work while as an "atador de rede" and "escrivão" of the boat?
Answer:-I have no fixed schedule so I can work all night or just a single afternoon or morning, but sometimes I work 24 hours straight, which affects me quite socially.

Question5
- You think that your job has a future in a way that it would be attractive to young?
Answer:-No because it is a life too hard and risky, and today, in a work people are looking for comfort, and the salary isn´t right because we can receive very much money on that month and on the next one we can receive half or a quarter less.

XXI century jobs : green energy

Well, in our days the work is more related to green energys because of the current concern for the environment. And we have an example very close to us, the work in the natural reserve in Berlengas done by the guards of the natural reserve.

-Flora and Fauna
The archipelago of Berlengas have some interesting features, which aroused the curiosity of naturalists in the nineteenth century.

.The scientific study of the flora of the islands began with the first shipment of botanist Jules Deveau, of the Society of Geography of Lisbon in August 1879.

.This pioneering work has provided the right to recognize the presence of 106 species of plants, but new species were discovered, eight in total:
- Pulicaria microcephala
- Armeria berlengensis
- Echium Davaei Rouy
- Andryala Ficalheana
- Crepis gaditana Boiss
- Angelica pachycarpa
- Melandrium sylvestre Rohl
- Sedum andegavense.

.The scientific observations made on the island also was used to inventory the species living there.

.The first species identified, of the family of the reptiles was the Largatixa of Bocage Carbonell Podarcis berlengensis and the Largato of Berlenga Lacerta lepida unique of the island and today is very rare.

.other species:

- The black rat (Rattus rattus)
- The rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus
- The yellow leg seagull
- The Corvo-marinho-de-crista Phalacrocorax aristotelis
- The Airo Uria aalge

.Because of this whole life on the island of Berlengas is necessary protection, and is in this context that the guards enter with the following measures to ensure the balance of all species:

- From 1976 was not allowed the entry of other animals on the island eg dogs.
- The number of visitors has limitations
- Rehabilitation program to prevent the disappearance of the Lizard
- Breking seagulls eggs to prevent the explosive growth of the same
And much more...

In conclusion the work of these men is very important and without them many species of animals and plants disappear leading to a lack of knowledge of this species in the future.

New Retirement Lifestyle - Reinvent Work, Travel, and Beginning a New Hobby

• House swapping in another country
• RV travel domestic or overseas
• Eldertreks (stress free worldwide travel for people over 55)
• Take a walking vacation
• Travel with the grandchildren
• Rent a houseboat
• Take a hostelling vacation

Reinvent Work

There are a lot of reasons for continuing to work. Perhaps simply needing the money or the health benefits, or, desirous of staying physically or mentally active.

Here are some great ways to reinvent work:

• Start a small business;

• Help ease the teacher shortage - become a teacher or a substitute: Most school systems offer emergency certification programs;

• Caretaking someone else's property;

• Work from a RV or work while living in a RV;

• Re-locate to semi-retire: anew place to work and live;

• Retirement phase: Make it gradual rather than abrupt.

Travelling

One thing most people plan to do after retirement is travel. For some reason, people rarely use their vacation time when they are working to travel and then plan to do major travelling after working for twenty to twenty five years. Travelling after retirement is a great idea however. You are able to spend more quality time in places, without a “set” schedule from work telling you that you must report back to the office in a few days. You can actually take your time and experience relaxation like never before.

Start a New Hobby

Beginning a new hobby is a great way to re-charge third age. Leading in the past a steadfast routine, working long and hard hours, a hobby will offer a new perspective on the years ahead.

• Learn to be an artist;

• Learn to play a musical instrument;

• Begin collecting antiques;

• Start a collection;

• Making a family tree.

Working Abroad

Working abroad can provide an opportunity for total fascination in a foreign culture, in a way that just travelling through cannot. However, some graduates use work simply as a way to get funding to enable them to experience the cultures in the first place.

ENHANCING EMPLOYABILITY.

All forms of work experience make you more attractive to employers, but working abroad may be particularly beneficial in developing certain strengths and skills such as:

Initiative and determination - from finding and securing the job to making your experience a success;

Communication skills - through working with people from different cultural backgrounds and overcoming language barriers;

Flexibility - by having been able to adapt to new and unfamiliar living conditions and work cultures.

TAKING TIME OUT.

Students may choose to go and work abroad as a way of getting a complete break from studying, while also picking up valuable skills and experience. For graduates, working overseas might act as a much needed break before starting a career and could provide some useful reflection time before making any final decisions. After a demanding final year, you might want to take some time out to consider your options in a completely different environment.

Other reasons for working overseas include:

• limited job opportunities in the UK in a particular sector;

• altruistic reasons, particularly for those wanting to work or volunteer in a developing country;

• possibility of better living conditions or earning potential than in the UK;

• family reasons, such as relocating for a partner’s job or emigrating for a better lifestyle.

After-School Jobs

For many students, having a job after school or on weekends is as important as going to school. Yet other students think working takes valuable time away from what's really important.

THE PROS TO GETTING AN AFTER-SCHOOL JOB.

You'll get work experience. In a world where nearly every employer wants experience, the sooner you get in to the working world, the easier it'll be for you to obtain future employment.

You'll earn money. Besides earning money, you will learn about taxes, balancing a checkbook, and making your money last from paycheck to paycheck. You will also learn the value of money.

You'll learn responsibility. From the duties you'll perform at your job to getting there on time, working teaches you responsibility.

You'll meet people. You might make new friends or develop a client base or other professional connections. And don't forget that you'll have a boss that can be a reference for college and future job applications.

You'll understand more about the world around you. Even if your first job is in a fast-food restaurant, you may be surprised to discover that work is more difficult than you expected. Learning how to deal with customers and coworkers is a skill that you can transfer to other areas of your life. And you'll gain a new appreciation for those serving you, which, besides making you a more compassionate person, can be invaluable later in your career.

THE CONS TO GETTING AN AFTER-SCHOOL JOB

You'll have less time for studying. It's critical, as a student with a job, that you quickly learn to budget your time between study and work. Having a part-time job can look great on college applications — unless your grades suffer as a result.

You'll have less time for extracurricular activities. If, in addition to working, you want to quarterback the football team, star in the school play, and participate on the debate team — all while being president of the student body — something's got to give. You need to rest sometime.

Do you have the worst job in the all world?!

The next time you are tempted to complain about your job, spare a thought for this guy.
Ramesh Sahu works in the sanitation department of Calcutta, cleaning out the city's sewers. Despite a rise in the number of deaths of manhole workers every year, workers regularly go into the manholes without any protective gear.
